A flat lay of six small crochet projects for beginners

The best first crochet projects are small, flat and made with one or two stitches: a coaster, a granny square or a dishcloth. You finish them in under an hour, so you practise more and see progress fast. The list below goes from easiest to hardest, with the time and stitches for each one.

Before you start

  • Know these first: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc). Learn them in our beginner lesson.
  • Use a smooth, light-coloured worsted weight (#4) yarn and a 5 mm (H-8) hook unless a project says otherwise.
  • Times are for a beginner who knows the stitches. Your first one may take longer.

Projects under 30 minutes

1. Chain bookmark or bracelet

Chain about 10 in (25 cm), slip stitch back along the chain, and add a tassel. It teaches even tension, the skill every other project depends on.

2. Square coaster

Ch 15. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across (14 sc). Ch 1, turn, sc across. Repeat until it is square, about 4 × 4 in. Use cotton so it absorbs drips.

3. Hair scrunchie

Join yarn to a hair elastic with a sl st. Work about 50 sc around the elastic, then join. In the next round, work 3 dc in each sc for a ruffle. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

4. Granny square

The classic four-round square in double crochet. Follow our step-by-step granny square. Make a pile and they become a bag or a blanket later.

5. Keychain tassel

Ch 20, sl st into the first ch to make a loop, then sc around the loop and attach a tassel. A good use for leftover yarn.

9. Snowflake ornament

A three-round snowflake for the tree or a gift tag. Free crochet snowflake pattern

6. Mug cozy

Chain the height of your mug minus the handle area, work hdc rows until the strip wraps around the mug, and sew on a button with a chain loop.

7. Cotton dishcloth

The perfect first real project: square, useful and forgiving. Use our simple crochet dishcloth pattern, or try the moss stitch for extra scrub.

8. Ear-warmer headband

The same ribbed rectangle as our hat, just shorter: chain 4–5 in, work hdc-blo rows until it wraps around the head with 1 in of stretch, and seam the ends. Pinch the seam with a strand of yarn for a twisted look.

10. Christmas tree ornament

A small triangle shaped with decreases, finished with a star. Free crochet Christmas tree pattern

11. 1-hour ribbed hat

One rectangle in bulky yarn, seamed and gathered at the top, with a size chart from baby to adult. See the 1-hour easy crochet hat.
