Crochet Christmas Tree: Easy Free Pattern for Ornaments and Decor
An easy crochet Christmas tree pattern for beginners: a flat single crochet tree with a trunk and hanging loop. Make it as an ornament, a garland or a gift topper.

This little crochet Christmas tree is a flat triangle of single crochet with a short trunk and a hanging loop. It uses scraps of green and brown yarn and takes well under an hour. Make one as an ornament, string several into a garland, or tie one onto a gift instead of a bow.
- Skill level: beginner
- Stitches: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), single crochet two together (sc2tog), slip stitch (sl st). US terms.
- Yarn: medium worsted weight (#4) in green, plus a little brown. Scraps are enough.
- Hook: 4.5–5 mm, or the size on your yarn label
- Size: depends on yarn and tension. Measure your first tree.
- Also need: blunt yarn needle, scissors; optional small buttons, beads or yellow yarn for decorations
How to sc2tog (single crochet two together)
Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert the hook into the following stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all three. Two stitches have become one.
Make the tree
- Row 1: with green, ch 17. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 16 sc.
- Row 2: ch 1 and turn. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Sc in each stitch across: 16 sc.
- Row 3 (decrease row): ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc in each stitch until 2 remain, sc2tog: 14 sc.
- Repeat rows 2 and 3 until 2 stitches remain. Your counts go 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, then 2.
- Top: ch 1, turn, sc2tog: 1 stitch.
- Hanging loop: ch 15 and sl st into the top stitch. Fasten off, leaving a short tail to weave in.
Check your count on every decrease row. If one side of the triangle looks steeper than the other, a decrease was missed on that edge.

Add the trunk
- Turn the tree upside down so the foundation chain edge is at the top. Count 6 stitches in from the right edge.
- Join brown yarn in the 7th stitch with a sl st, ch 1, and sc in the same stitch and the next 3 stitches: 4 sc.
- Ch 1, turn, sc in each of the 4 stitches. Repeat once more for 3 trunk rows in total.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Decorate your tree
- Ornaments: sew on small buttons or beads, or make tiny French knots in red and gold yarn.
- Star: with yellow yarn and a needle, make a few long straight stitches crossing at the top to form a star.
- Garland: make 5 to 8 trees and thread them onto a length of twine through the hanging loops.
- Gift topper: skip the hanging loop and tie the tree onto the ribbon of a present.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a bigger crochet Christmas tree?
Yes. Start with a longer chain, keeping an even number of stitches in row 1, and continue the same two-row repeat. A chunky yarn and larger hook also give a bigger tree with the same counts.
How do I make the tree stiff?
Single crochet is already firm. For a stiffer ornament, spray it lightly with fabric starch, shape it flat and let it dry.
Is this a good first Christmas project?
Yes. It uses single crochet in rows plus one simple decrease. If single crochet is new, start with our beginner lesson.
